Room acoustics
Good room acoustics have many aspects:
- a good musical sound;
- good intelligibility;
But also:
- pleasant to perform in;
- suitable for the coherence of the musicians;
- a good balance between orchestra and singers;
- suitable for films and electronically amplified music or speech;
- suitable for making recordings or for listening to recordings.
At the heart of room acoustics lies the art of listening. Repeated intensive listening in various situations is fundamental to the continuing expertise of the room acoustics specialist.
Various measuring and computational methods accurately can predict the acoustic properties of a room. Now that computers have sufficient computing power, it is even possible to listen to rhe acoustics of the future room even before it has been built (auralisation).
